James Zabiela
James Zabiela might have taken a few years off from releasing new music, but the electronic music world is still catching up with him. The British DJ is one of dance music's premier technical wizards, transforming CDJs into bona fide instruments in a way only a select few can. As an expert in his craft, Zabiela even advises Pioneer on their products, testing prototypes and pushing the boundaries of what DJing equipment can achieve. His performances are a masterclass in live editing, loops, effects, and creative improvisation, making every set a unique experience. He has toured extensively, bringing his inimitable style to audiences across the US, South America, Asia, and Europe.
Now, James Zabiela embarks on a new chapter in his career. After a year of refining his techniques, he returns with his first-ever Balance mix CD, contributing to a legendary series that has previously featured influential artists like James Holden, Joris Voorn, and Will Saul. This marks his first release in five years, and Zabiela approached it with the same meticulous care that defines his live performances. He spent months experimenting, "smashing stuff together," as he describes, to discover brilliant blends and eureka moments that highlight his dynamic approach to DJing. His attention to detail—mixing in key and carefully aligning melodies—sets him apart as a truly musical DJ, crafting sets that feel like intricate puzzles of sound.
Zabiela’s vibrant and colorful style makes him a standout selector, appealing to audiences across genres. Active since the early 2000s, he has released several mix CDs and original productions for Renaissance. He also runs his own label, Born Electric, which has showcased house and techno tracks from artists such as Pedram, Pedestrian, and Drew Hill.
